Summary: AIS Network has declared Juneteenth a paid company holiday. The corporate headquarters will close in observance of June 19.
Richmond, Va. — June 19, 2020 — Virginia eGov solutions provider AIS Network has declared Juneteenth a paid company holiday for all employees to celebrate and reflect on this significant historic event.
“In step with Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s announcement that he is making Friday, June 19, an official holiday in the Commonwealth of Virginia, AIS Network will be closed on Friday, and employees will have a paid day off,” said CEO Jay Atkinson in a memo to employees yesterday.
Juneteenth is the oldest known day of celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were finally told that the Civil War had ended and that the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln nearly two years earlier, had made them free.
Efforts to pass a law codifying Juneteenth as a permanent state holiday are currently underway in the Virginia legislature.
